The register just says Poppone, but this is Antonutti’s appassimento red from Friuli in Italy’s northeast. It is 80% Merlot dried before pressing, Amarone-style, blended with 20% of the rare native Pignolo that rests 12 months in tonneaux before the final marriage in bottle. Generous, dense and plush, with a serious core of berries and sweet spice; the 2021 pulled a 90-point critic score and earlier vintages took gold in Brussels and at Mundus Vini.
